Restaurant Review: The Hole Truth About Local Donuts

Duck Donuts takes the cake when it comes to local donut shops.

Duck Donuts takes the cake when it comes to local donut shops.

Shoppers, Dunkin’ or Duck? Which donut is the best? Will it be the OG clubhouse donuts from Shoppers? The classic neighborhood Dunkin’ Donuts? Or the far out and fresh Duck Donuts? This very important question will be answered using a rating system from 1-5, one being the worst and five being the best based on taste and texture.

Dunkin Donuts

Size – Medium

Price for 1 dozen – 9.99

Boston Kreme:

Taste/Texture –  The classic Boston Kreme donut has a delicious creamy filling, although, the exterior is somewhat rough, while the interior is more cakey than fluffy, and the chocolate icing and donut do not have a fresh taste. Overall Rating – 3.5

Chocolate Frosted:

Taste/Texture: Everyone’s go-to chocolate frosted donut from Dunkin’ Donuts is kind-of overrated for two reasons. First, the actual dough part of the donut is plain and flavorless. Second, the icing doesn’t do much justice anyway, because it’s very artificial-tasting. But are you really paying that much attention while stuffing donuts in your mouth? Overall Rating – 3.5

Capitals Donut:

Taste/Texture: The red, white and blue icing, although pretty, basically tastes like plain sugar and again has that hard outside like it’s been sitting on a shelf a bit too long. Overall Rating – 3.5

Shoppers’ Donuts

Size – Large

Price for 1 dozen – 4.98

Powdered with Vanilla Creme filling:

Taste/Texture: This Shopper’s signature Colossal donut, although big, has a smooth and rich vanilla creme. The downfall of this donut is the thick, bread-like texture. Overall Rating – 4, but a 2 for the texture

Chocolate Frosted:

Taste/Texture: This chocolate frosted donut, unlike Dunkin’s, has an authentic chocolate taste. Although, it still has the problem of a texture. Overall Rating – 4, but again a 2 for the texture

Cronut:

Taste/Texture: The cronut is the crazy-amazing invention of a croissant mixed with a donut. This cronut has a tasty glaze, a bit of a crunchy outside, and a softer interior. This is the best donut from Shoppers’ so far. Overall Rating – a solid 4

Duck Donuts

Size – Small

Price for 1 dozen – 11.95

Vanilla Glazed with Sprinkles:

Taste/Texture: The timeless glazed donut with rainbow sprinkles is not overly sweet and has that melt-in-your-mouth texture only found at THE Duck Donuts. Overall Rating – 5

Chocolate Iced with Chocolate Sprinkles:

Taste/Texture: Like Shopper’s, this donut has a rich and real flavor to its chocolate. Instead of the cracking, dry icing of the other donuts, the icing on Duck Donuts is fresh and glossy. The consistency only added to the donut presentation, with the icing dripping artistically down the side. Again, this donut has the same soft, light texture inside, and that just-right, freshly fried taste. Overall Rating – 5

Chocolate and Vanilla Iced with Oreo Crumbs:

Taste/Texture: What more could you ask for in a donut? Chocolate-on-chocolate, fresh and authentic, with a slightly crunchy exterior and a fluffy interior along with tasty Oreo bits crumbled on top. Overall Rating – 5

In conclusion, it is obvious that Duck Donuts has taken the top spot. Although they lack the colossal size of Shoppers’ donuts, (which is kind-of unnecessary, let’s be real) but that just-out-of-the-fryer taste makes Duck Donuts so much better. Not that Shopper’s and Dunkin Donuts aren’t good, but Duck Donuts just goes above and beyond the regular Saturday donut-run expectations. Even though the price is higher than others, it’s still worth it to make a small investment and a drive down the road.
