What You Missed Last Week: Week of 1/30

  • The Washington Capitals increased their league-leading points total to 78 with a win against the Los Angeles Kings. The caps won 5-0, and now have won 9 straight games at the Verizon Center. The Washington Capitals Captain, Alex Ovechkin, was honored before Sundays game for recording his 1000th point in a capitals jersey. This was not only a memorable game for Alex Ovechkin, but a gain of confidence for backup goalie, Philip Grubauer. Grubauer recorded his third shutout for the regular season. The Washington capitals are playing great regular season hockey right now, and they need to continue having everyone contribute to the wins.

  • Donald Trump’s travel ban is blocked (again). There are 7 countries affected by this ban, and many travelers weren’t able to come back into the country. There was lots of chaos and lawsuits, so a federal judge had temporarily banned his order. This past weekend, Trump asked the federal court to overturn the judge’s ruling on restraining his immigration ban. A series of tweets from the president were posted this weekend about the ruling calling it “ridiculous” and a “bad decision”. With the travel ban blocked many refugees have raced to get back into the US.

  • This year’s halftime show was performed by Lady Gaga who is a major advocate for LGBT. Days leading up to the Super Bowl many people speculated about whether or not she would use her performance to express dissent. Gaga opened up with singing “God Bless America” and “This Land is Your Land” as well as speaking the last part of the Pledge of Allegiance. Gaga didn’t get any more political than this.
