At some point this week, the news that offensive coordinator  Paul Troth was leaving for an assistant coaching job at John Champe broke out, with skepticism and questioning on why this happened from people around the school, and caught many by surprise. Troth, who has been offensive coordinator at Dominion since 2012 is moving on to the next chapter of his life and career.

Troth’s family played the main role in this job decision, which he made clear, is a career not based only on football. “The only reasons behind me leaving are family related with a balance of career and football,” Troth said. “I’m a teacher first and foremost. I wouldn’t be making this move if there wasn’t a possibility of me becoming a teacher at Champe either.” Troth’s family lives less than half a mile from the high school which helps the overall convenience of how his job works with his family life.

“If it was just based off of football it would be a dumb decision, because there’s a lot of talent here, there’s something to build on, there’s a lot of good players and coaching and I think that tradition is going to continue,” Troth said.

Although many who first heard thought to criticize Troth for the decision on leaving the team he has coached for 4+ years, he acknowledged the decision was difficult for him. “It was a really tough decision because I owe a lot to Dominion, Dr. Brewer, and Coach Buckwalter for bringing me in 5 years ago and for being a part of the change here,” Troth said.

Troth is positive that Coach Buckwalter wants the best for him, “Like anybody I think he’s happy for me personally that it’s going to work out.” Troth said, “I think any time one of your coaches leaves that you worked so hard with your going to be bummed out a little bit, but he wants what’s best for me and my family so he understands and he was supportive.”

“We have to move on, we’re going to be fine,” Head Coach Karl Buckwalter said on moving on from Troth’s departure. “We have already started the interview process.”

It remains to be determined if Coach Troth will be teaching at Dominion next year.
