The Importance of Being Earnest Comes to Dominion

Dominion Drama’s fall production, The Importance of Being Earnest, will be put on from December 1st to 3rd at 7:30 pm each night along with a Saturday matinee at 2:00 p.m. The Oscar Wilde play, set in 1895 Britain, tells a wacky love story rife with mistaken identity and baby drama.

The Importance of Being Earnest sports a mostly senior starring cast—Nathan Herbert as Jack Worthing, Alex Melio as Algernon Moncrieff, and Emily Wilson as Gwendolyn Fairfax. Rounding out the main roles are Rebecca Williamson and Leecy Silk, double-cast as Algernon’s lover Cecily Cardew.

Ms. Young, along with the members of the Dominion Drama department, selected The Importance of Being Earnest to be the fall play in April 2016. “It’s funny, clever, and charming,” said Ms. Young, the play’s director and head of Dominion Drama. “I’m excited to see the audience’s response. They will laugh.”

Though the product on Thursday night will undoubtedly be polished, the Earnest cast and crew ran into several challenges along the way. “We didn’t have many of the costumes we needed,” Young said. “Luckily, Ms. Wilson and other parent volunteers stepped up.” Emily Wilson, who plays Gwendolyn, believed similarly. “It was difficult to get all the pieces together,” Wilson said, “and it’s going to be hilarious.”

Dominion’s production of the nineteenth-century comedy will too have a unique bent. “We’ve had fun incorporating things into the show that weren’t really in the script,” Wilson said. “The show will be really cool and unique.”
