Why DC is the Worst Sports Town

Since the turn of the millennium, DC sports fans have endured sixteen years of below average teams. After a devastating Capitals loss, Washington’s losing streak continues as it is the only city with three major sports teams that has not won a conference title game let alone made it to one since the year 2000.

The Caps came into the playoffs hot after winning the Presidents Trophy, which is given to the team with the most regular season points in the NHL. Many thought that the drought would finally come to an end until the Caps showed their true DC colors and fell apart in the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

This is just the latest and most disappointing of the many disastrous seasons by Washington sports teams.

Since 2000, the Redskins have only made the playoffs four times in which they have only made it past the first round once. In their most recent disappointment this year, they were knocked out in the first round by the Green Bay Packers after coming into the playoffs on a four game winning streak.

The Wizards have fared slightly better making it to the playoffs six times but have yet to make it to the Conference finals since 1979 when they were the Washington Bullets.

Similarly the Nationals have made two playoff appearances since their creation in 2005 but were not able to advance to the second round of the playoffs either time. The memory of game five of the 2012 NLDS against the cardinals is still fresh for Nats fans. Up by two runs in the ninth inning with two outs, the Nationals allowed four runs, ending their playoff run and demonstrating one of the worst chokes in DC sports history, which is saying something.

Which brings us to the Caps who have been the only consistent team in near memory for the DMV. The Capitals have made the playoffs 10 times since 2000 but have not made to the Conference finals once during that span.

So what is it that makes this city unable to get close enough to a championship to even think about being champions? Is the Capital of the free world cursed or are we just that bad?

Comcast SportsNet reporter Michael Jenkins may have put it best after the Caps loss on Tuesday before he chugged a glass of some sort of alcohol on air,  He said, “You know how everyone says ‘oh you can do whatever you want if you put your mind to it. ‘ It’s a whole one big lie. Caps were supposed to win it all this season. They put their minds to it. Look what happened, crushing disappointment. So give up on your dreams.”

So while you may be telling yourself that we will get a ring next year, just remember that we have been saying that since 1991 when the Skins won it all. It may be time for Washingtonians to heed Jenkins advice and just throw in the towel.
